What is Soft Tissue Grafting?

A man with mouth pain.

Soft tissue grafts are a form of gum surgery often performed by periodontists. The process involves taking a piece of healthy tissue, either from a specific part of the mouth or from a tissue bank donated to the dentist, and adhering it to the areas of the gums where it is needed.

While traditional methods used metal instruments to perform the procedure, this can often be an uncomfortable experience for the patient. It also has a tendency to remove more healthy tissue than what is needed. With a soft tissue laser, our office is better equipped than ever to perform the procedure in a safer and more effective way with less discomfort involved.

When is Soft Tissue Grafting Performed?

A smiling dentist.

There are many instances where gum grafting is needed in order to restore the integrity and structure of your gum tissue. For example, when the gums become inflamed and damaged as a result of plaque buildup, they can begin to recede and show portions of tooth enamel that are not usually visible, including the root. This can make teeth appear longer and put more vulnerable areas of teeth at risk of damage and even infection. Gum tissue can also recede as a result of brushing and flossing too aggressively or untreated teeth grinding and clenching.

Additionally, gum tissue grafting may be performed for cosmetic reasons if the gum line appears unbalanced or is not aesthetically-pleasing to the patient. We’ll go over your needs in better detail and create a treatment plan from there.

How Does the Treatment Work?

To perform the procedure, Dr. Rynar starts by removing a very small amount of tissue from the roof of the mouth (or your upper palate.) Thanks to soft tissue laser technology, it’s easier than ever to minimize post-operative symptoms, improve healing times, and make your overall aftercare far more comfortable. After removing the tissue, he carefully places it in a pocket in between your healthy gum tissue and your exposed root. Finally, the gum tissue is repositioned over the exposed root and grafted tissue, ensuring proper coverage for long-term healing.

What are the Benefits of Soft Tissue Grafting?

When we perform gum tissue grafting, we do so based on what your needs might be. For example, many people would prefer to make their gum line more even and balanced while also ensuring their smile looks fuller and larger. In this instance, soft tissue grafting as well as gum recontouring can be performed.

However, if you have periodontitis or another advanced form of gum disease, soft tissue grafting ensures that your tooth enamel is protected and your teeth do not prematurely become loose and fall out. Treatment also works to reduce sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
